Project: Building a Historical Database for One Transformative Year

Some years are so packed with events — happening in parallel, at enormous scale — that even veteran researchers struggle to hold the full picture in their minds. Revolutions, policy declarations, wars, migration waves, international conferences — all within the same 365 days.

This project had one mission: take a specific year and map it at the highest possible resolution.

The Challenge: Event Density That Raises Hard Questions

The client — a senior researcher deeply familiar with this period — knew this year inside and out. But the deeper he dug, the more he discovered that sources tell different stories. One newspaper reports an event on the 4th of the month, a personal diary records it on the 6th. A diplomatic document attributes a decision to one figure; meeting minutes show someone else entirely proposed it.

The question wasn't "what happened?" — but "what actually happened, in what exact sequence, and who really made the decisions?"

What We Built

A Structured Database of the Entire Year

Every "event" we found — in every source where we found it — was recorded as a separate entry with:

  • Exact date (or date range when uncertain)
  • Location — using a consistent geographic mapping
  • Actors — every person mentioned, identified and linked to other events
  • Source type — press, diplomacy, personal diary, minutes, letter, testimony, photograph
  • Full citation — the exact passage from the source
  • Confidence level — verified fact, interpretation, or rumor

Volume of Material Processed

  • 14 newspapers in three languages, across the entire year — approximately 5,000 issues
  • Over 300 diplomatic documents, some published in academic editions, some still in archives
  • 47 personal diaries and letters of key figures
  • Minutes from 12 organizations — committees, parties, institutions
  • Approximately 90 biographies and memoirs that mention events from this year

The Technology

  1. Custom OCR — including handwriting, old print and multilingual documents
  2. Smart entity extraction — an LLM agent identifying names, places, dates and concepts in every paragraph
  3. Automatic cross-referencing — when the same event appears in two sources, the system flags matches, contradictions and complements
  4. Dynamic timeline — an interface that lets you scroll through the year, filter by topic, and drill into any event

What It Achieved

Day-Level Chronological Precision

Instead of "around that time it was decided that..." — the researcher can see: on the 3rd, a meeting was held. On the 5th, the news appeared in the press. On the 7th, the other side responded in a private letter. On the 12th, the matter reached a formal body for discussion.

Revealing "Shadow Players"

The database surfaced figures who didn't appear in existing scholarly literature — people who were present in meetings, mentioned in others' diaries, who signed documents — but whom historians had not noticed because the information was scattered across dozens of different sources.

Resolving Contradictions

In 23 cases, direct contradictions were found between sources. In 17 of them, we resolved the contradiction through a third or fourth source that confirmed one version. In 6 cases, the contradiction remained open — documented in a way that allows future researchers to return to it.

An Accessible Knowledge Base

The final product: a digital database that the researcher can query in natural language: "Who met with whom in December?", "What articles were published on the subject the day after the declaration?", "Is there evidence that so-and-so knew about the decision in advance?" — and receive an answer with original citations.

Who Is This For?

Building a single-year database is the right approach when:

  • A decisive year in the history of an organization, community, state or movement
  • Multiple source types that no one has yet consolidated in one place
  • A need for chronological precision — not "approximately" but "exactly"
  • Preparing a monograph, dissertation or biography that demands complete command of the material
  • An organization documenting its founding year or a turning-point year comprehensively
